A Biosurveillance Center (ABC) at Malden Brook
Mission: "Observe to Preserve"
The prospect of rapid detection and early warning of socially disruptive biological events that are triggered through natural, accidental or intentional mechanisms is of keen interest not only to the public health sector, but also to hydrological, agricultural, law enforcement and homeland security communities.
ABC at Malden Brook can provide decision makers and first responders early recognition of biological events of potential local and regional significance. These events can include introduction of invasive species, natural disease outbreaks, and the accidental or intentional release of biological or chemical agents. ABC detects these events through data acquisition, integration, analysis and dissemination of critical information.
ABC at Malden Brook will seek out and develop innovative ways to bring biosurveillance initiatives into educational offerings and outreach projects. This initiative includes establishing strategic collaborations with colleagues, academic centers, institutions and laboratories
In addition, working together with federal government agencies, states and local and private entities, ABC at Malden Brook stands as a national leader in the development and implementation of vital biosurveillance programs. This innovative project can empower individuals, organizations and municipalities to better protect their security and preserve the environment for future generations.
We envision a resource for conserving the land and its environs, where students can observe and study animals in their natural habitat. In turn, this study can help them understand how these animals could serve as paths for infectious agents causing human outbreak.
By promoting education, AVMF will be advancing these modern concepts for the next generation of scientists. ABC’s unique methodology preserves the open space and natural habitat of Malden Brook Farm, while also placing a protective biosurveillance shield is placed over the community.
